Korean Theatre Group Brings "La Traviata" to the CCP

From March 2-4, Giuseppe Verdi's opera "La Traviata" will be staged at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the first of three operas to be staged at the CCP this year, along with "Madame Butterfly" in June and "Barber of Seville" in July.

"La Traviata" will feature a cast made up of some of the best opera singers from the Philippines (performing on March 2) and South Korea (performing on March 1 and 3), with musical accompaniment courtesy of the Philippine PhilHarmonic Orchestra, under the baton of conductor Jae Joon Lee. The University of Santo Tomas Singers would also be there as the chorus.

La Traviata tells the story of Violetta, a young courtesan in Paris during the 19th century, who falls in love with a man named Alfredo. Their relationship, however, does not receive the support of Alfredo's father, who thinks his son's relationship with a courtesan would hurt their family's reputation. Eventually, Violetta makes a sacrifice by deciding to end her relationship with Alfredo, after being persuaded by his father. This decision would lead to Violetta's downfall and eventual demise.

Raul Sunico, president of the CCP, hopes that this effort would help people to become more interested in opera, a rather unknown art form in the Philippines which "combines music, theatre, dance, and design", to quote the CCP president during a press launch for the production.

The Filipino cast would include soprano Rachelle Gerodias as Violetta, tenor Arthur Espiritu as Alfredo, and bass-baritone Andrew Fernando playing the role of Alfredo's father. The Korean cast, meanwhile, would include soprano Yun Kyoung Yim, tenor Jae Wok Lee, and baritone Daesan No.
