PAGASA Revises Rainfall Flood Warning System

To avoid confusion, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has made revisions to its new rainfall warning system.

Now, the green warning (15-30mm of intense rain for the next 2-3 hours that may cause threatening floods) has been changed to orange. The green warning has been confused by many as an indication for better weather conditions, as the color green is often used to mean "go" or "all systems go", when in fact PAGASA actually means otherwise. This has indeed caused confusion to many (myself included).

The new color, orange, is actually more appropriate as the color is understood by many to mean "caution", as in the case of traffic lights. This color also evokes alertness (just like red and yellow), which is more fitting to the situation.

Other than that slight mix-up, I must commend PAGASA for coming up with this new warning system which is more detailed and specific. I do hope that there would be less confusion now regarding the suspension of classes, since we are now able to determine how much longer the rainfall is going to last, and local governments would be properly guided on what course of action to take.

Stay safe, everyone!
