Whitney Houston Dead at 48

The American singer Whitney Houston, known for her hit songs "Greatest Love of All" and "I Will Always Love You" has died on Saturday at the age of 48 in Beverly Hills according to US media reports.

The cause of death is still unknown, but TMZ.com suggests she may have taken Xanax and Alcohol be (which, combined together, would become a powerful sedative), causing her to fall asleep or lose consciousness in the bathtub and drown.

In the past few years, the singer has publicly battled drug and alcohol abuse, which has put a strain on her once-majestic voice. Her troubled relationship with husband Bobby Brown is also much-reported by the media. The news of her death came on the eve of the Grammy Awards, which Whitney once dominated at the height of her career. Ms. Houston was also set to appear in a remake of the 1976 film "Sparkle", which would have been her first movie role since 1996.

Born on August 1963, Whitney Houston was discovered in 1983 at a New York City nightclub by music producer Clive Davis. At the time of her death, she has sold over 170 million albums. She left behind her boyfriend, Ray-J, and an 18 year-old daughter, Bobbi Kristina, her daughter from a previous marriage with singer Bobby Brown.
