"The Phantom of the Opera"--Coming to Manila in 2012!

Filipino fans of the well-loved musical The Phantom of the Opera will have something to look forward to this year.

For a limited period, The Phantom of the Opera will be staged at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Main Theater, beginning on August 25.

The musical is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed, having been seen by over 130 million people  since it was first staged at London's West End in 1986, and at Broadway two years later in 1988. Since then, the musical has won over 50 major awards and has earned over $5.6 billion.

Based on a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux entitled "Le Fantome De'Lopera", the musical tells the story of a disfigured musical genius known as "The Phantom", who haunts the Paris Opera House, who falls in love with a young soprano named Christine, and lures her as his protege. He falls desperately in love with the young woman, and jealousy, madness, and passion leads to a dramatic series of events.

The musical was highly successful during its runs in the Asia-Pacific region (with sold-out tickets in cities such as Singapore, Seoul, and Tokyo. The musical's producers are hoping for the same thing in the Philippines.

Directed by Harold Prince, this show will feature over 130 actors, crew, and orchestra members, amazing scenery, and special effects. Over 230 different costumers are also expected, courtesy of the late international designer Maria Bjornson.

According to producer Tim McFarlane, Managing Director of The Really Useful Company Asia Pacific, this touring production of the Phantom of the Opera would be "as fine as any version you might see on the West End or Broadway". He also says that the cast is made up of some of the best performers from the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and South Africa.

This production's run in Manila, says James Cundall, Chief Executive of Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, has been a long-term dream for them, as they have always wanted to bring this musical for the musically-inclined people of the Philippines to enjoy.

"It is a superb show which epitomizes all that is great about musical theater...The Phantom of the Opera is a worldwide sensation which will take Philippine audiences on an unforgettable musical theter journey," he says.

The Philippine run of The Phantom of the Opera is produced by Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, David Atkins Enterprises, Hi-Definition Radio Inc. and Concertus in association with The Really Useful Group, and is presented by Smart and Citibank.
