Where Good Friends Dine: Abe at the SM Mega Fashion Hall

The opening of the new Mega Fashion Hall at SM Megamall just a week ago surely got my family excited. With more shops and restaurants being added, there always seems to be a reason for us to keep coming back. This will be true especially months from now when most (if not all) of the shops and restaurants have already opened.

There weren't really too many shops and restaurants that opened at the same day as the Mega Fashion Hall's opening a week ago. One of the few restaurants that did open that day is Abe (pronounced as ah-beh), which specializes in Filipino food mostly of Kapampangan origin. The restaurant, by the way, was named after the late artist-writer E. Aguilar "Abe" Cruz, father of Larry Cruz of the LJC Group of Restaurants.

We've already been to their branch in Serendra on quite a few occasions, and my family and I have been generally satisfied during each visit. We were pleasantly surprised to see them open a new branch at SM Megamall, so we decided to have dinner here over the weekend.

Surprisingly, the restaurant was actually quite busy that day, considering they've just recently opened and probably not too many people are aware that they have a new branch there. Still, we didn't have to wait for a table, and that's always a good thing! I wonder how long it'll stay that way--getting a table at Abe in Serendra can be quite difficult sometimes.

Unlike the Abe branch at Serendra, the Megamall branch felt a bit more "open"--there weren't really too many partitions that divided the restaurant into several sections so the whole place seemed brighter and felt more spacious. There's just something a little weird, though, about the lack of partitions, and it somehow makes the place seem so...temporary, but I guess that's something I have yet to get used to (or maybe they're planning to renovate the place soon? I don't know).

Moving on to the food, the serving sizes at Abe are pretty small, so I suggest you order a bit more than what you would normally do in other restaurants. What's pretty interesting about Abe, though, is that they offer unlimited rice, which is almost unheard of in places like Abe and is more common in fastfood places. They use good quality rice, too.

Their Crispy Tadyang comes with some type of sauce and a side of atchara. The sauce really enhances the meat and the atchara goes really well with it!

The Baby Squid in Olive Oil tasted really fresh. I suggest you try this, and that's saying something, coming from someone who's not really a big fan of seafood.

The Ginataang Sigarilyas was okay, but let's just say I've had better. My parents liked it, though.

On the other hand, the Pork Binagoongan never disappoints! This has got to be one of my favorite dishes from Abe. It tastes even better with steaming, hot (and unlimited!) rice!

Were we satisfied again this time? Well, it's pretty obvious, don't you think? Everything was completely wiped out!

I'm really happy that Abe decided to open at SM Megamall--it looks like we'll be eating here more often from now on!
