The University of Asia and the Pacific in Ortigas Center, Pasig City is now accepting your donations for the victims of Super Typhoon Haiyan (locally known as Yolanda) in the Visayas region. There is an urgent need for goods such as:

• Chlorine tablets
• Bottled Water
• Canned Goods
• Snacks
• Juices

Volunteers are also very much needed to help repack relief goods. Cash donations are also accepted, and these may be deposited through:

The University of Asia and the Pacific needs your help to give out relief goods to flood victims in Metro Manila. UA&P is now accepting your donations--food, clothes, medicines, and the like--just drop them off at the University of Asia and the Pacific main entrance along Pearl Drive in Ortigas Center in Pasig City.

What you can donate:

• First-aid supplies
• Food (preferably the ready-to-eat ones)
• Drinking water
• Milk (for children)
• Medicines
• Diapers (both for infants and adults)
• Underwear
• Toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc.)
• Blankets
• Rubber slippers

Monsoon Rains Batter Metro Manila and Surrounding Provinces

Heavy rains brought about by the Southwest Monsoon pounded Metro Manila and nearby provinces on Tuesday, causing dams and rivers to overflow and bringing widespread flooding in places such as Marikina, Malabon, and Valenzuela.

These floods just came less than three years after Typhoon Ketsana (local name Ondoy) dumped a month's worth of rainfall in many areas in Metro Manila and nearby provinces, with Pasig, Marikina (especially Provident Village), Cainta, and Quezon City being the worst hit areas. The death toll exceeded 400 and thousands had to flee their homes. 

This time around, the La Mesa Dam had gone beyond its spilling level, while the Marikina River had reached a critical point. Thousands of families in these areas were forced to evacuate by their respective local government units. Power had been knocked out in some areas and many were left stuck in their homes and needed to be rescued. The University of the East-Ramon Magsaysay Medical Center (UE-RMMC), for instance, was flooded, leaving patients and staff stuck at the upper levels. By Tuesday night, the hospital was already running low on food and diesel for their generators.

Throughout the day, the social networking site Twitter was used by many Metro Manila residents to disseminate information about their relatives or friends or even strangers who needed to be rescued from their homes.

According to the Department of Science and Technology's Project NOAH (Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards), the rain that fell over Metro Manila on Tuesday had exceeded that of Ondoy's--accumulated rainfall this time had reached 472mm in a period of 22 hours, as opposed to the 455mm of rainfall that fell in 24 hours back in 2009.

How to Help Disaster Victims in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan

Last Saturday, Tropical Storm Washi (local name Sendong) hit the Southern Philippines, devastating several regions, particularly the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. Thousands of people in this region (that rarely gets hit by such storms) were caught unaware as flash floods wiped out villages. As of this posting, the death toll has almost reached 1,000 with hundreds more missing, making this the deadliest storm to hit the country this year. The death toll is expected to rise as more bodies are recovered in the devastated areas. 

The people of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan (as well as other devastated regions such as Negros Oriental) are in need of help. The people need relief goods such as food, clothing, water, and medicines. In times like these, the best thing that we could do is to help.
