The revered leader of the highly secretive North Korea has died on Saturday at age 69, according to North Korean state media.
According to an official announcement, Kim Jong-il, who has been North Korea's leader since July 1994, died on a train while on his way to an area outside Pyongyang. According to the announcer, who was dressed in black, the leader died of "physical and mental over-work". Mr. Kim is believed to have been suffering of various diseases, and has also suffered a stroke in 2008 which has kept him out of the public limelight for a while.
It is yet unclear who will succeed him, but it is likely that his youngest son, Kim Jong-un, would follow in his father's footsteps and take over.
