This year, the world's largest miniature airport was unveiled at Hamburg, Germany as part of the Miniatur Wunderland, a miniature exhibit that covers 6,400 square meters of floor space. The airport exhibit, which takes up 1,150 square meters, is one of the several sections at Miniatur Wunderland, a miniature railway attraction that is the first of its kind in the world.
The exhibit is divided into several sections--Harz, Knuffingen, the Alps and Austria, America, Scandinavia, Seitzerland, and Hamburg. Each section gives us a realistic portrayal of each of the different places (except for Knuffingen which is fictional), with all movement, lights, and sounds controlled by computer operators from a hidden location. The exhibit, which is still undergoing expansion, is expected to be completed by 2020.
